Fox News Poll Has Talarico Leading — Texas Market Disagrees at 53 Cents
A Fox News poll has Talarico ahead of Paxton 51-48, but the Texas Senate market still prices Paxton at 53 cents. Here's what each side is seeing.

A Fox News poll released Thursday shows James Talarico leading Ken Paxton by three points in the Texas Senate race. The prediction market didn't move.
As of Friday afternoon, Paxton holds 53 cents, Talarico 47 cents, across $7.5 million in combined volume on Kalshi, Polymarket, and PredictIt. The Fox News survey — conducted July 23–27 by Beacon Research and Shaw & Company Research (n=1,006 Texas registered voters, ±3 points) — found Talarico at 51 percent and Paxton at 48 percent. Within the margin of error, but consistent with other recent polling showing the race is genuinely competitive.
The Poll's Details
The topline numbers are almost secondary. The structural findings are where the race gets interesting.
Paxton holds 89 percent of Republican support — meaning roughly 1 in 10 Republicans aren't with their party's nominee. Among non-MAGA Republicans specifically, 24 percent say they'd back Talarico. Among independents, the gap is sharper: Talarico leads 68 percent in that cohort.
Character concerns register prominently. Fifty-nine percent of Texas voters said they are worried Paxton lacks the moral character to serve in the Senate, including 36 percent of Republicans themselves. By comparison, 47 percent expressed concern that Talarico is "too extreme."
"Although Paxton dominated Cornyn in the GOP primary, that bruising contest left scars," Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who co-conducted the Fox News survey with Democratic pollster Chris Anderson, said in a statement accompanying the results. "He has considerable work to do with non-MAGA Republicans and independents."
Paxton senior advisor Nick Maddux declined to read much into the numbers: "The only poll that matters is November 3rd."
The enthusiasm gap adds another layer. Among voters who describe themselves as extremely motivated to vote, Talarico leads by 6 points, 53 to 47. Democrats in Texas are more motivated to vote (by 7 points) and more interested in the midterms (by 6 points) than Republicans, the Fox News poll found.
A separate Texas Public Opinion Research survey — conducted July 15–17 (n=1,048 likely Texas voters, ±3.4 points) — found Talarico leading by 5 points, 45 to 40, with 14 percent undecided. Among those undecided voters forced to choose, 19 percent lean toward Paxton and 10 percent toward Talarico, per Fox 7 Austin's reporting on that poll.
Why the Market Holds at 53 Cents
Despite two consecutive polls showing Talarico with a lead, Paxton's market price sits above the midpoint. The divergence reflects the structural weight Texas's voting history carries in prediction-market pricing.
Texas has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since Lloyd Bentsen in 1988. No Democrat has won a statewide race of any kind in Texas since 1994. Fox News poll or not, the market is pricing those 30-plus years of structural lean — a factor that polling models can capture in crosstabs but that markets tend to apply more aggressively as a prior.
Prediction markets historically discount poll-based leads in states with deep structural lean against the leading candidate. Paxton's 53-cent price doesn't mean traders think the polls are fabricated. It means they're assigning that structural lean significant probability weight alongside the data.
The Republican enthusiasm deficit and character-concern numbers are harder to dismiss. A quarter of non-MAGA Republicans crossing over, combined with a 7-point Democratic enthusiasm advantage, represents a genuine real-world mechanism for closing a 14-point 2024 presidential margin. Whether it closes enough of it is precisely what $7.5 million in volume is trying to answer.
The Debate Question
The Texas race still has no confirmed debate schedule. Talarico has accepted three invitations (September 22, October 6, October 13). Paxton's campaign has acknowledged it is "close to terms" with one outlet but has not committed to specific dates.
September 22 is the first potential live-stage moment. If Paxton agrees, it ends a debate drought of more than a decade and creates a direct contrast moment the market can price. If he doesn't commit, the avoidance narrative may itself become a market signal.
With a Fox News poll, a Texas Public Opinion Research poll, and a sustained Democratic enthusiasm edge all pointing in the same direction, the market is holding a 6-cent premium on Paxton. Whether September's potential debate stage — or its absence — finally breaks that premium is the next thing to watch.
