$30 Million Can't Buy a Lock: Why the Texas Senate Market Still Favors Paxton at 56¢
Talarico raised triple Paxton's Q2 money. Every major poll shows a dead heat. The market still prices the Republican at 56¢. Here's why.

Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico raised $30 million in the second quarter of 2026 — more than triple what Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton raised in the same period. Multiple polls show the candidates deadlocked. And the cross-platform prediction market prices Paxton at 56¢ to win.
That gap between money and market is the story of the Texas Senate race.
The Numbers
Talarico's Q2 haul is a record for a U.S. Senate candidate in the second quarter of an election year, per the Texas Tribune — roughly triple the $9 million Paxton raised from April through June. Since September 2025, Talarico has raised $70.2 million total, according to The Hill, with more than 780,000 individual donors and about 97% of contributions at $100 or less.
Paxton, who defeated incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the May 26 GOP primary runoff — with Trump backing him in the final days — immediately set up a joint fundraising committee with the National Republican Senatorial Committee. That structure brings the national GOP's resources to bear, partially neutralizing the raw fundraising gap.
The cross-platform market (Kalshi, Polymarket, PredictIt consensus) prices the race at Paxton 56¢, Talarico 43¢, on $6.87 million in volume. That is a meaningful lead for the Republican in a race where the polls say it is a coin flip.
What the Polls Show
A New York Times/Siena survey (June 19–27, 656 likely voters) found the race tied at 47–47, per Politico. The University of Texas/Texas Politics Project poll (June 5–12, 1,200 registered voters) showed Paxton at 43%, Talarico at 42%, within the margin of error, per the Texas Tribune. A Texas A&M/ReconMR survey (June 1–4, 807 respondents) showed both candidates at 46% each, per The Hill.
Multiple pollsters, same result: effectively tied. Talarico leads among women, independents, and voters under 45 by double digits in most surveys. Paxton leads among men, rural voters, and the state's Republican baseline. Talarico has gained ground with Hispanic voters — 61% in the NYT/Siena survey backed the Democrat — despite a majority of Texas Hispanics supporting Trump in 2024.
Why the Market Still Prices Paxton at 56¢
No Democrat has won a Texas statewide race since 1988. That 38-year baseline exerts gravitational pull on any model that weighs historical partisan performance. The market is not just processing the current polling snapshot — it is discounting it against a long drought.
Paxton's consolidation story adds to the Republican floor. After a bruising primary — the Texas House voted to impeach him in 2023 on corruption allegations; the Texas Senate acquitted him; and he agreed to pay $300,000 to settle a 2015 felony securities fraud case with the charges dropped, per The Hill — 84% of Republican primary runoff voters told the UT/Texas Politics Project they are backing him. That is a substantial base.
The character question cuts the other way. Fewer than 40% of NYT/Siena respondents said Paxton has "good character," compared to 56% who said that about Talarico, per The Hill's reporting on the poll.
The Senate Control Overlay
Texas is one of six Democratic pickup targets on the path to a Senate majority. The party needs a net four-seat gain to flip the chamber. A Talarico win would be the first Democratic Senate pickup from Texas in nearly four decades — and would require flipping a state that has resisted even in favorable national environments.
At 56–44, the market is saying: the race is genuine, the Democrat is real, and $30 million in fundraising has made this contest legitimate. The state is still Texas.
The November 3 general election is the test.
